Thai Topiary Design

thai topiary Topiary is a popular feature among both public and private Thai gardens. It is the art of creating interesting shapes and sculptures from clipped evergreen plants and shrubs. Often referred to as 'the Thai-style bonsai', the Thai's have been practicing the art of topiary for generations. Many visitors to Thailand will have noticed this popular gardening pastime, as topiary animals and sculptures often decorate the landscapes of temples, homes, government buildings and public spaces.

The tree used in the traditional Thai topiary is the Diospyros rhodocalyx (Tako-Na), which is a medium sized tree, able to grow up to 15 metres in the right conditions; but there are many species that can be utilised in Thai topiary design, creating different looks and sizes, examples being privet (Ligustrum), bay laurel (Laurus nobilis) and yew (Taxus).

The shrubs utilised should be evergreen, have small pointed leaves or needles, grow quickly, and produce a naturally thick foliage.

Often wire frames and cages are used to assist in the shaping of the topiary, and you can buy many different shapes, styles and sizes from various Thai markets.
