Improving drainage in the tropical rain

Drainage Most tropical gardens at some point will witness rainfall so heavy that waterlogging can occur. You may even have an area of the garden that you have got used to continuously flooding when it rains.

The causes are numerous, perhaps the soil has become compacted over time, or the area of the garden may be a natural low point where lots of water tends to migrate. If so, a drainage system may need to be installed.

There are many different drainage solutions for all types of waterlogging, but a good one within a garden area might be to construct a 'soakaway'.

A soakaway is basically a hole dug into the earth and to the appropriate size (although most should be at least 1m deep to be effective) then filled with differing layers of material, and finished with topsoil. The soakaway will effectively create a place where the excess water can run off, and slowly drain during periods of heavy rainfall, but is unnoticable and 100% safe when installed properly.
