Here are some popular Thai garden plants that we often use in our garden design projects.
Alpinia sanderae
Often known as Alpina vittata, this upright perennial can grow up to five
feet in height. Long green leaves are striped with white and cream.
Bird of Paradise
Birds of Paradise, also known as Crane flowers. Native to South Africa, these popular tropical plants bloom from September through May. The bright colours of Birds of Paradise mean that these flowers are a designer’s favorite and a popular symbol of paradise.
Heliconia wagnerian
The stunning plants grow well in the shade and can reach anything up to about 6-10 feet tall. Blooms from January through July, with a peak in April and May. With a very unusual look, they add an exotic elegance when part of a tropical garden.
Dieffenbachia amoena (Tropic Snow)
Plants may reach up to 6 feet (1.5 m) tall bearing dark green leaves with patchy areas of white and cream along the veins. Also known as the Dumb Cane, this name reflects the fact that the acrid sap will burn the mouth and numb the throat to the extent that it should not be used around small children, although the plant is widely used throughout Thailand as a houseplant due to its toughness and ability to withstand low light conditions.
Stobilantes dyerianus (Persian shield)
Persian Shield has an amazing coloured foliage which always proves popular and widely used in beds and containers, best in partial shade.
