Thai Garden Design have been working on the installation of this amazing gabion rock wall for a steep sloped garden in Hua Hin. The team had a considerable amount of clean up and land preparation to do, in order to get the existing ground leveled and good enough for grass and planting.
The owners who reside in Hong Kong recently acquired and are renovating the property on one of Hua Hin’s more prestigious estates. The house is located towards the very top of a high slope, and the owners were concerned that they may need terracing and some protection for guests who could stumble and fall down.
The solution was to construct an attractive gabion rock wall, with deep foundations, which would protect from falling downwards, and also create space for a flat tropical themed garden, with lawn space and privacy planting. A gabion wall is a wall of natural rock, enclosed within an open metal cage, which gives an aesthetic and attractive wall.
Planting themes were discussed, and the main types and species were chosen. Popular among the mix are Bottle neck palms, Manila palms, Orleander (for colour), sago palms, with ficus hedges to hide and ‘green up’ the large rock wall at the back of the property.
Also the slope was to be grassed on the neighbouring side, so Zoysia Matrella was chosen, due to it’s sun loving properties and ability to thrive and grow well on steep slopes.
The final garden is a wonderful tropical pallete of colour and foliage, with many different species set off by the surrounding hills and mountain scape. The owners were extremely pleased with the final garden, and the time frame in which it was achieved.
