The Strelitzia plant, or Bird of Paradise, is a perennial plant originally native to South Africa. They are now widely seen throughout most tropical climes (they are commonly known in South Africa as the Crane flower).
There are many varieties, but perhaps the best known, S.reginae, grow to around 1 metre in height and consist of long, green banana like leaves with robust, distinctive pinkish orange flowers.
The Bird of Paradise enjoys landscapes with full sun and good drainage. They are an excellent all rounder for decorating large areas of landscape, at the base of large trees and walls, and for foreground fillers, as in the photograph.
This is a Heliconia, not Strelizia.
