The Begonia genus is home to over 1,500 species of plants. The genus begonia belongs to the begoniaceae flowering plant family which originates from many areas of the tropical and sub-tropical world.
There are hundreds of different cultivars and hybrid species, mainly due to the ease with which they can be hybridized, even those from different continents. These cultivars are often developed for their attractive flowers in many forms of white, pink and yellow colour, or their ornamental foliage.
Begonias generally do well in shaded regions, with moist, well drained soil.
